Margelov Cautions U.S. Against Applying "Libyan" Methods to Other Volatile Regions

Mikhail MargelovWASHINGTON. April 27 (Interfax) - Russia's presidential special envoy for cooperation with African countries Mikhail Margelov has cautioned the United States against applying "Libyan" methods to other volatile regions.

Margelov, the chairman of the Federation Council's International Affairs Committee, held talks with American politicians in Washington while visiting the United States.

"As we were discussing instability in the Arab world I cautioned the United States against applying 'Libyan' methods to other volatile countries. Given the Libyan experience, Russia's reaction to the use of force will be a lot different in that case. The American side took note of this information," Margelov told Interfax.

Margelov said he had met with Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs Ellen Tauscher, Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Arms Control, Verification and Compliance Rose Gottemoeller, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman and other politicians.

The United Stets should not advance any global initiative in the coming years as it is more practical to advance where mutual understanding has been reached already, he said.

Margelov also said that he had discussed a wide spectrum of issues pertaining to Russian-American relations, saying that everyone he met with inquired about the 2012 elections in Russia.

"But the strongest accent was put on the promotion of the 'reset' agenda, especially cooperation in missile defense. They inquired about Russia's readiness to make further cuts in the nuclear potential, including tactical nuclear arms," he said.

American politicians spoke about their vision of the American presidential elections, which, they said, will not be easy.

"I made a point that the 'reset' process must be filled with a content deepening bilateral cooperation. We should cooperate on tracks where our interests meet, but are not in conflict, the fight against pirates off Africa, for instance," Margelov said.
