Number of extremism-related crimes growing dramatically in Russia - Investigative Committee

Crowd of Protesters Near Kremlin Walls with FlaresMOSCOW. Feb 17 (Interfax) - The number of extremism-related crimes in Russia has grown by 20%, Russian Investigative Committee chief Alexander Bastrykin said.

"The share of serious and especially serious crimes in the total number of crimes is not decreasing and still makes about one quarter. A number of deeds related to extremism has grown rapidly - by 20% - to 656 crimes. I have to note that almost all of them have been solved," Bastrykin said at an Investigative Committee board meeting in Moscow on Thursday.

- - "Let's say openly - and we have already said about this numerous times - that crimes committed by immigrants are among the factors playing into the hands of various fomenters of ethnic enmity," he said.

The number of crimes committed by foreigners has been growing steadily over the past several years, Bastrykin said. "Nearly 49,000 crimes committed by foreign citizens and people without citizenship were investigated around the country last year. More than one quarter of them are serious and especially serious deeds often committed by groups and not infrequently inhuman and cynical," he said.

Such crimes provoke interethnic tensions, he said.

At the same time, the number of crimes registered in Russia has been declining in the past years, Bastrykin said. Last year, this figure went down by 12%, he said.
