Medvedev Calls Police 'crap'

Police in Riot GearYESSENTUKI. Nov 19 (Interfax) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Friday described the country's law enforcement agencies including the Interior Ministry as "crap" and "hypocritical" for the way statistics are recorded and kept.

"The new police reform bill that is being drawn up should make sure that these statistics are clearer," Medvedev said at a security conference in Yessentuki in Stavropol Territory in southern Russia.

Touching on statistics regarding the North Caucasus Federal District, Medvedev said, "In the first ten months of this year, 64,000 crimes were registered in the district, that is, while the number of premeditated murders declined in the country, their number in the district grew by 5%.

"The crime detection rate has declined in fact by 10%. This last indicator, in my view, calls for special analysis, because our statistics are hypocritical and can't be trusted," Medvedev said. "I would like once again to draw the law enforcement bosses' attention to this. There are no correct statistics, they are often crap. Something needs to be done with this, including the reports that the Interior Ministry deals with."

However, the president did praise the work of security personnel working in the region: "Sixty counter-terrorist operations and over 4,500 combat operations have been conducted in the district this year. This is five events a day and 150 a month on average. These events have saved people, and this is important."
