Russian president notes media's special role in developing state, democracy

Dmitri Medvedev Sitting at Desk with Laptop Computer, With Hand to ChinMoscow, 13 January: Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev has sent congratulations to those working in the Russian press on their professional day, Russian Press Day, the Kremlin press service said on Thursday (13 January).

"In the modern world the media play an exceptional role. Their professionalism, independence and technological equipment largely determine the development of the state, the level of democracy and freedom in society. And of course, it promotes the reinforcement of civil peace and accord," the congratulatory telegram from the president says.

Medvedev also said that the profession of journalist has always occupied a special place in Russia, and the printed media has enjoyed the popularity and trust of millions of people.

"And today its authority is made up of many components, from the timeliness of delivering information to the impartiality of assessments and deep analysis of unfolding events. All these qualities are intrinsic to the modern Russian press, which is continuing the best traditions of the more than 300-year history of national journalism," Medvedev said.
