After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the KGB, Russia's notorious intelligence service, was dissolved, but a new security service was created, with powerful backers and ever-increasing authority-the FSB.

In this new book, authors Andrei Soldatov and Irina Borogan, who have covered Russia's security services for more than a decade, penetrate the secret world of the FSB.

They illustrate how, abetted by their most famous alumnus (Vladimir Putin, first as president and later as prime minister), the security services were given unprecedented rein, and emerged a more shadowy and powerful force than the Soviet KGB.

In recent years, the Kremlin has deployed the FSB to intimidate the political opposition, reassert the power of the state, and carry out assassinations overseas.

And unlike its predecessor, Russia's modern security service operates independent of parliamentary oversight, beyond public accountability.
