U.S. IS DETERMINED TO FURTHER ITS STRATEGIC RELATIONSHIP WITH RUSSIA, STATE SECRETARY POWELL ASSURES

Pechnikov/ - The United States welcomes Russia's political and economic
integration into the world community, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell
told the World Economic Forum annual gathering of business and political
leaders in the Swiss town of Davos. He assured his audience that the George
W. Bush. Administration was determined to further consolidate the long-term
strategic partnership established between the U.S. and Russia. He said his
country favored the prospect of Russia joining the World Trade Organization
and getting full membership on the Group of Eight leading industrialized
nations.
State Secretary Powell acknowledged differences in American and Russian
perspectives on certain issues, but said that the partnership built by the
two nations was up to their great-power status.
Powell said the U.S. was getting used to cooperating with Russia and China
in peacekeeping activities. He cited collaborative efforts in South Asia
and the Middle East.
