Happy New Year to all Russian citizens and Russia-specialists. You may remember that I was a correspondent in Moscow throughout the Gorbachev and Yeltsin years, working first for Reuters and later for the British newspaper, The Independent. My special interest was the impact of Kremlin reforms on the lives of ordinary Russians.

After President Putin was elected, I felt the need of a change for myself and I also thought that perhaps Russia needed a period when Western people would stop commenting and offering advice so that the country could find its own path. I have spent the last two years in the desert of Central Australia and I am currently helping people in the Outback to launch their own magazine.

Away from Russia, I have been saddened to see how little coverage the international media now gives the country unless there happens to be some new tragedy involving Chechnya. I know there is so much more to Russia than that and I am starting to feel the country exerting its pull on me again. Indeed, I am as nostalgic as any emigre.

I have decided that if my communication skills and experience could be of use, I would like to return to work in Moscow again in the near future. If any of you need the services of a veteran correspondent, please contact me on hrwomack@switch.com.au

With best wishes from Helen Womack.
