Russian Official: Extremism in North Caucasus Caused by Corruption, Unemployment
Interfax

Anapa, 25 August: The (Russian) Security Council secretary, Nikolay Patrushev, has noted certain problems that are, in his opinion, creating "breeding ground" for extremism in the North Caucasus.

Speaking at the meeting on improving the social and economic situation and rendering assistance to law enforcement agencies of the Southern Federal District that was held in Anapa (Krasnodar Territory) on Tuesday (25 August), Patrushev said that corruption, growing crime and multiple problems in the economy are typical for many regions of the North Caucasus.

"There is social disorder, poverty, high unemployment. All this is made worse by problems in ethnic and interfaith relations as well as by a critical level of subsidies from the federal budget," Patrushev said.

"All this creates breeding ground for carrying out terrorist attacks and growing extremism," he said.

"This situation must be changed, which depends to a large extent on regional heads, on interaction between structures and a search for new resources and they do exist," Patrushev said.
