Over 50% of Russian citizens want to vote for Putin - poll

MOSCOW. Feb 3 (Interfax) - Vladimir Putin has far outdistanced the other presidential candidates in his electoral rating and support for him has grown by three percentage points, the state-run pollster VTsIOM told Interfax on Friday. Asked whom among the candidates they would support were the presidential elections to be held next Sunday, 52% of respondents named Putin, the United Russia party nominee, compared to 49% a week earlier.

The poll was conducted on January 28 and 29, and involved 1,600 respondents in 138 populated areas of 46 Russian regions. The margin of error was 3.4%.

Electoral support for Putin's rival, Gennady Zyuganov of the Communist Party, has dropped from 11% to 8%, and that of Vladimir Zhirinovsky of the Liberal-Democratic Party from 9% to 8%.

The percentage of citizens who would vote for Sergei Mironov of A Just Russia party has fallen from 6% to 4%, while the electoral rating of self-nominee Mikhail Prokhorov has remained at a stable 4%.

President Dmitry Medvedev's approval rating remained stable at 55%-57% during the month and that of Putin at 58%-60%.

United Russia is the only political party that has been drawing stable electoral support of 42% for the past three weeks. The ratings of the other parties continue to fall, with the Communist Party's rating dropping from 15% to 12%, of the Liberal-Democratic Party from 11% to 8%, A Just Russia from 9% to 7% and smaller parties standing at 1%-2%..
