Russia: Court Fines Pensioners' Leader for Organizing Cash-for-Benefits Protest
RIA Novosti

Novosibirsk, 31 January: Aleksandr Tarkov, city council member and leader of local branch of the Russian Party of Pensioners, was today fined R1,000 by Novosibirsk's central district court for having violated a picketing procedure, the court's representative has told RIA.

Tarkov was one of the organizers of a rally staged by pensioners outside the regional administration offices in central Novosibirsk on 20 January, the source added.

More than 500 people protesting against the replacement of concessions with cash payments blocked the city's main street, Krasnyy Prospekt for two hours.

Police did not prevent them from blocking the street and did not use force to disperse the rally. However, the rally organizers were presented with indictments of administrative violations after the demonstration, the source said.
