Russia, WB agree on poverty reduction strategy
April 13, 2004

Moscow. (Interfax) - The World Bank's and Russia's priorities on reducing poverty and accelerating economic growth coincide, said Kristalina Georgieva, the new director of the World Bank's Moscow representation office and permanent representative in Russia, in a Tuesday interview with the press.

Georgieva has been on a fact-finding mission to Russia since the beginning of this week. She is scheduled to hold a number of informal meetings with officials from the government and the Central Bank of Russia. Georgieva will take office in her new capacity from May 1, 2004.

The objectives of doubling GDP and halving poverty in Russia perfectly correspond with the avenues the World Bank is pursuing in partnership with other countries, she said.

Georgieva also said she believes her work will be exciting, because Russia is a World Bank shareholder and is increasing its role in this capacity, becoming a major player in international development affairs.
