Russia's Putin, Iraq war find place in folklore
Source: TVS, Moscow, in Russian 1700 gmt 1 Apr 03

[Presenter] The war in Iraq has given rise to folklore in Russia. Moscow newspapers have published several antiwar songs, they have appeared on audio tapes, too. News from the Iraqi front-line and spring have led authors to recollect the Soviet credo of reacting to the topical news of the day: one can hear in songs sung in the evening what is published in morning newspapers.

[Unidentified male singer, singing non-rhyming verse out of tune, over archive footage of Putin meeting ordinary Russian citizens and world leaders] President Putin has the highest rating all over the world. America should stop the war in Iraq. All Russian citizens support President Putin. Three cheers to President Putin! Hooray! Hooray! Hooray!
