12. THE SOVIET MILITARY IN ISRAELI-ARAB WARS

RAS No. 5 (January 2002), which was devoted to the theme "The Soviet side of the Cold War," contained a summary of research by Isabella Ginor on Soviet plans for military intervention in the Six Day War of 1967.

A new article by Ms. Ginor, on the role of the Soviet military in the Israeli-Egyptian War of Attrition (1969-70), appears in the October 2002 issue of the journal "Cold War History" (published by Frank Cass, London). Here is the abstract of the article:

"New evidence emerging from the former USSR indicates that its massive intervention (codenamed Operation Kavkaz) on Egypt's side in the War of Attrition with Israel was undertaken as a Soviet strategic initiative in the Cold War context, rather than in response to Israeli action as previously supposed. It was a deliberate and largely successful effort to prepare Egypt's capability for its ultimate attack across the Suez Canal in 1973. As official Soviet policy documents are still unavailable, this account is based largely on the operational facts, as reported by the actual participants."
