Kazakhstan: The Road to Independence
Energy Policy and the Birth of a Nation

Prominent Russia, Eurasia and energy expert Ariel Cohen of the Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC has done a public service in producing this excellently researched, thorough guide to the politics, geopolitics, and energy economics of this vitally important nation. This vast nation -- four times the size of Alaska and six times that of Texas or France, --is the energy treasure-house of Eurasia. It is awash in natural gas, coal, uranium, and one of the largest oil reserves in the world. Stretching across three time zones, it is the great strategic prize among the Newly Independent States in the vastness of Central Asia. It already surpasses Kuwait in its oil production, and by 2015, its oil output is projected to exceed Iran's. Since achieving independence following the disintegration of the Soviet Union at the end of 1991, Kazakhstan has remained remarkably stable. Every other state in Central Asia fared far worse, and, as Cohen documents, Kazakhstan, dramatically raised the standards of living, health and education people.
