Putin's spokesman says new cold war impossible
RIA Novosti

Moscow, 6 March: The world financial and economic crisis will not lead to a new cold war. There are no grounds for this, the Russian prime minister's press secretary Dmitriy Peskov believes.

"It is good that there is no reason for a cold war either in minds or real life," Peskov said in an interview with Voice of Russia radio. He said the roots of a cold war lie in a clash between two ideologies but the world is now dominated by common democratic values.

"There is no place in the world for various ideologies... We all adhere to democracy and human rights. We all support the freedoms of religions and speech and freedom of ethnic minorities. These are global values and we support them. Therefore there is no place for two different ideologies, there is no reason for a cold war," Peskov said. However, he said, if the interests of second or third countries are not taken into account, problems might arise in future.

"In fact, today, despite the negative impact of the crisis on the economies of all countries, we are witnessing a political and geopolitical detente," Peskov said.

"Thank God the economic crisis did not pave the way to political tension, and this is why we can implement political plans we want. I hope that, in future, mankind will not stoop to energy wars in this dynamic atmosphere. I hope that geo-strategic chess games will have new rules and games will be replaced by real cooperation," he said.

Peskov said the world economic crisis will affect countries' economies and cooperation among them. "Most likely, the world economy will not be the same. The present trade atmosphere will lead to a real economy. Bank operation will be supervised stricter. New rules of monitoring will be agreed with everybody."
