Russian gas price "exorbitant" - Yushchenko

KYIV. Jan 28 (Interfax) - Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has doubted the adequacy of Russian natural gas price for Ukraine.

"We paid an exorbitant price for the situation which occurred in the gas sphere," Yushchenko told the ceremony of awarding merit badges to the winners of the Ukrainian state prize in the scientific and technical area for 2008 and annual presidential prizes for young scientists on Wednesday.

"People who made this decision did not think about the state monopoly and national interests," he said.

Yushchenko forecast that the confrontation in the energy supply area will grow. "Both confrontation and political discussions on the energy supply, as well as on the essence of energy security will grow and enhance year on year," the president said.

Gas will remain "a political notion" for a long time, he added.
