Most Ukrainians Positive About Russia, But Russia Has Fewer Ukraine Fans

KYIV. May 12 (Interfax) - About 88% of Ukrainians have a positive attitude to Russia and 55% of Russian citizens are positive about Ukraine, according to recent parallel polls.

Reports on the polls were presented by the Kyiv International Sociology Institute (Ukraine) and Levada Center (Russia) after the Kyiv pollster questioned 2,370 respondents on April 4 to 13 and the Levada Center 1,600 respondents on March 14 to 17.

The polls indicate that 6% of Russian citizens have a very good attitude towards Ukraine and 47% of Ukrainians have a very good attitude towards Russia.

Thirty-four percent of Russian citizens dislike Ukraine and only 7% of Ukrainians have a negative attitude to Russia.

Asked how they want relations between the two countries to develop, 20% of Ukrainians surveyed said they would like the two countries to form one state and 19% of Russian citizens expressed the same idea.

Fifty-seven percent of Russian respondents and 67% of Ukrainian respondents said they would like their countries to be independent, and friendly to each other.

Sixty percent of Ukrainians said Ukraine's accession to NATO was a threat to Russia's security, and 44% of Russian respondents agree with this.
