Russia To Join WTO On Conditions Favorable To Domestic Agribusiness - Medvedev

UFA. Feb 26 (Interfax) - The terms and conditions on which Russia will join the World Trade Organization (WTO) will not negatively affect domestic agricultural producers, said Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

"These negotiations are in the final phase now. I think the terms and conditions on which we will gain access to the WTO are reasonable and can protect our agricultural producers," Medvedev said taking questions from journalists at the Volga Federal District on Tuesday.

"We should join this organization not just for the sake of it but in order to gain advantages and not to ruin our agricultural sector," Medvedev said.

A program for the agricultural sector development, which has been adopted on the basis of a national project, includes measures aimed at protecting Russian agricultural producers, he said.

"Of course this cannot solve everything. We need to look at the global trends and we need to take some one-off measures as well," he said.

Talking about a global food crisis, Medvedev said that, if Russia had not pursued a national project in the agribusiness sector its consequences would have been much more severe for Russia.

"We have a pretty good situation in the crop cultivation area and the trends in the animal husbandry area are positive. That is, we have managed to cope with certain issues but we cannot stop and the implementation of these programs needs to be continued," he said.

In the coming years more then 1 trillion rubles will be invested in the Russian agribusiness sector, including 540 billion rubles from the federal and about 500 billion rubles from regional budgets, and also 400 billion to 500 billion rubles from extra budgetary funds, he said.
