U.S. companies incapable of working in Arctic - Gazprom

MOSCOW. Nov 5 (Interfax) - U.S. companies do not know how to work properly in far northern conditions and this is one of the reasons why oil and gas fields in Alaska are not being developed, Gazprom (RTS: GAZP) CEO Alexei Miller said.

"We see that U.S. oil and gas companies have not been developing Alaska for forty years. There are actually a number of reasons for this. In particular, U.S. companies do not have experience working at such latitudes and conditions like the ones in Alaska. These are polar conditions," he told Channel One.

Miller said, however, that "there are companies, specifically Gazprom, that have such experience."

"A comprehensive program for developing Alaska needs to be drawn up, including with companies that have the appropriate experience and knowledge, in particular Gazprom," he said.

"We are prepared to offer our services here with the understanding that Gazprom is carrying out gas transportation projects in Russia right now that undoubtedly fall under the category of the new generation of gas pipelines and is drafting and building them with requirements that exist for the realization of projects in difficult climatic conditions," he said.
