Most Russians oppose missile shield in East Europe - poll

MOSCOW. Aug 1 (Interfax) - Russians in general disapprove of the United States' plans to deploy their missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic and call it dangerous for their country, according to poll findings unveiled by the Public Opinion Foundation (POM) in Moscow.

During the social poll conducted in 46 regions on July 26-27 the overwhelming majority of Russians (73%) said they disapproved of the missile defense plans in Eastern Europe.

Another majority - 69% - is certain that the U.S. missile shield in Europe is a threat to Russia's interests (13% believe it is not).

More than a half of respondents (57%) believe that the deployment of the missile system in Poland and the Czech Republic is not in the interests of most people in these countries, and only 6% said that it is.

During the poll respondents were asked about what they thought of Russia's relations with Poland and the Czech Republic.

It was found that the Russian-Polish relations are described by Russians are increasingly cool: the percentage of those who see Poland as an unfriendly nation has increased from 25% in 2001 to 36% in 2008, while the percentage of those who saw it as a friendly nation fell, accordingly, from 57% to 31%.

Russians seem to be more approving of Russian-Czech relations. Currently, 37% respondents see the Czech Republic as a friendly nation (against 57% in 2002). The percentage of those who think the opposite is much less: 23% and 20%, respectively.

Meanwhile, around a third of Russians (31%) believe that the Poles and Czechs will finally agree to the deployment of the U.S. missile shield in their countries; 14% respondents said they will not. Around half of the respondents (48%) could not make any forecast in this matter. Only very few believe that Poland and the Czech Republic will act differently, that is Poland will agree to the deployment of the missile system, while Czechs will not (6%), or vice versa (2%).
