Interfax
January 18, 2008

Every other Russian wants a wise politician and a "father figure" for the president, Interfax agency reported on 18 January. It quoted the recently released results of a public opinion poll, conducted by VTsIOM back in the summer. According to the poll, 42 per cent of the population would prefer a person with a modern outlook and good management skills.

The polls showed that 53 against 39 per cent of respondents enjoying good living standards would like to see the head of state as an efficient manager, whereas those on lower incomes - 55 per against 38 per cent - would prefer a true "nation's father figure".

The poll also established that 58 per cent of the respondents see no need for revision of the presidential powers, with seven per cent supporting the limitation of these powers and 22 per cent - their further extension.

Academics, lawyers and economists are the favourite choice for top official appointments, as indicated by 47 per cent of respondents. Ordinary people, not just politicians, should also be appointed, believe 23 per cent. For 23 per cent, governors and mayors would make a good choice, and for 22 per cent - top ministry and presidential administration officials will do well. The military, law-enforcement and special services should also be appointed to top government jobs, 19 per cent of respondents believe.

Successful businessmen and culture figures enjoy much lesser trust (14 and 10 per cent respectively). The poll was conducted in 153 populated centres of 53 Russia's regions, districts and republics.
