This book examines the economic reforms and material progress made since the Central Asian republics became independent. It shows how these countries, particularly Uzbekistan, have tried to preserve their economic and political independence from Russia, China, and the USA. Separate chapters deal with the developments and energy resources in each of the five states; another examines whether these states will return to the Russian sphere of influence of seek closer ties with other groupings, such as the EU, WTO, or ASEAN. The book is part of the Central Asian Research Forum, edited by Shirin Akiner.
