Court rules to fine Kasparov for joining unauthorized march

MOSCOW. April 14 (Interfax) - Moscow's Tverskoy court has found leader of the United Civil Front Garry Kasparov guilty of taking part in an unauthorized march and ruled to fine him 1,000 rubles, Kasparov's lawyer Yelena Liptser told Interrax.

Kasparov was detained on Saturday in downtown Moscow, where supporters of The Other Russia opposition movement had gathered for an unauthorized march.

Liptser said the court ruling would be appealed. The hearings of Kasparov's case lasted for six hours.

The court questioned a riot police officer, who had reportedly detained Kasparov. "Kasparov said, however, that he had been detained by another policeman," Liptser said.

"The witness provided contradictory evidence, claiming that Kasparov had been detained on Mayakovskaya Square. But my client was in fact detained on Pushkinskaya Square. The witness also claimed that Kasparov was at the head of the group of marchers, but then said he was in the first of second row," the lawyer said.

"According to the police officer, the demonstrators were first told to disperse, and were detained after they refused to do so," she said.

"The other demonstrators, detained on Saturday, were released from custody. They will have to report to the court later," Liptser said.
