Mironov's Call To Extend Presidential Term Will Be Implemented - Zhirinovsky

MOSCOW. March 30 (Interfax) - Russian Federation Council Chairman Sergei Mironov's proposals to extend the presidential term in Russia to five or seven years from the current four and to abolish the constitutional restriction under which one person cannot serve more than two successive terms as president will be implemented, Liberal Democratic Party leader and State Duma Deputy Chairman Vladimir Zhirinovsky has said.

"The (presidential) elections on March 2, (2008) will be held in line with an amended constitution. On December 2, (2007, the date of parliamentary elections), the people will authorize constitutional amendments through a referendum, and everything will go just as Mironov has said," Zhirinovsky told journalists on Friday.

The opposition does not support the idea to amend the constitution this way, Zhirinovsky said. "Mironov wants to pretend to be in opposition, but the opposition has never demanded terms be extended or a person kept longer in office," Zhirinovsky said.

"However the constitution can be amended now, this is of no significance to the real political process, because one cannot expect that the voting results will be tallied impartially and fairly," Zhirinovsky said.

If the presidential term is extended, then "the people will feel even more sick and disgusted," he said.
