Federation Council Will Set Date Of Presidential Elections On Nov 23 - Speaker

MOSCOW. Nov 10 (Interfax) - The Federation Council is to set the date of presidential elections at its session on November 23, Federation Council speaker Sergei Mironov has told Interfax.

"We will have a special meeting on November 23 to announce the date of presidential elections," Mironov said.

At the Federation Council Interfax was told that after the upper house sets the election date the decision will be promulgated in the media within five days.

Within 25 days of the promulgation political parties are to submit the resolutions of their congresses on the nomination of candidates to the Central Elections Commission.

"The law gives independent candidates only 20 days for notifying the Central Elections Commission," a spokesman for the Federation Council said.

He expected that the elections will be set for March 2.

"The second Sunday of March should formally be the voting date which would be March 9. However, the law permits holding elections a week earlier if the voting day happens to be a Sunday following a holiday," the spokesman said.

As for the election campaign, after the announcement of the election date it should start on December 2 the latest, he said.
