Russian NGO law not officially approved by Council of Europe - Davis
MOSCOW. March 3 (Interfax) - The Council of Europe has not officially approved the Russian law on non-governmental organizations (NGOs), Council of Europe Secretary General Terry Davis told journalists in Moscow on Friday.
Rather, the Council of Europe has offered only recommendations on how the law could be improved, he said.
Davis offered his comments in response to senior Russian officials' statements that the Council of Europe had approved the new NGO law.
Nobody asked the Council of Europe for approval, he said, adding that Russia only sought advice on how to make the document better.
