World respects but fears Russia - poll

MOSCOW. March 29 (Interfax) - Most Russians are certain that the world both fears and respects Russia, considering it a rich and free country, according to the findings of a poll unveiled by the Public Opinion Foundation (FOM) in Moscow.

Satellite Image Map of WorldSixty-one percent said other countries respect Russia; 28% said they do not. Even more widespread is the view that our country is considered to be rich: that is the opinion of 66% respondents, whereas just 22% said the opposite.

Nearly two-thirds (63%) of respondents have no doubt that the world fears Russia, and about half of them consider it a free (47%) and developed (44%) country.

Overall, today the world is on good terms with Russia, according to 48% of respondents; 34% disagreed. Thirty-two percent said that over the past years attitudes towards Russia have improved, 42% said it has not changed
and only 11% said it soured.

The poll showed that the Russians ascribe the positive dynamic primarily to Putin and Medvedev who "raised Russia's international prestige" and to "the correct foreign policy." Many respondents pointed to the Russian economic rise, stronger defensive capabilities and stability.

Meanwhile, the percentage of those who believe that a positive attitude towards Russia prevails has dropped from 58% in 2008 to 48% in 2012; the share of those with the opposite view has risen, accordingly, from 27% to 34%.

The poll was conducted in 100 towns across 43 Russian regions in March 2012.
