Russia, U.S. agree Syria settlement requires pressure on both sides in conflict — Peskov

LOS CABOS. June 19 (Interfax) - Russia and the United States agree that pressure needs to be put on both sides in the Syrian conflict in order to secure a solution to the crisis, the Russian president's press secretary Dmitry Peskov said. Syria Map

"The point where the positions coincide totally is the need to put pressure on both sides in order to sort out this problem. Putting pressure on one of the sides is unrealistic and futile from the point of view of finding a solution," he said at a press briefing in Los Cabos.

The two countries' positions are completely consonant and the sides want "all confessions to receive their security guarantees during this search for solutions," Peskov said.

"It will hardly be possible to find any solutions without it," he added.

At their meeting, the Russian and U.S. presidents reaffirmed their commitment to the plan offered by UN Special Envoy Kofi Annan, Peskov said.

"[Russian President Vladimir] Putin said that international efforts to settle the Syrian issue could not be full-fledged if they did not involve all countries and international organizations holding serious influence in the region," Peskov said.

Moscow and Washington underscored the need to continue their dialogue on this topic, he said.

"Both presidents instructed the foreign minister and the secretary of state to continue their close dialogue on this issue," Peskov said.
