Russians Want Their Country to Be Leading World Power — Poll

MOSCOW. June 9 (Interfax) - Russia will become a leading world power by 2020, in the opinion of 16% of Russians. Fourteen percent believe in prosperous and developed Russia, the Russian Public Opinion Study Center (VTsIOM) said after a poll held before the Day of Russia.

Thirteen percent expect prosperity to grow within the next decade, 10% think Russia will become an economically developed country, 9% hope for a developed social policy, 6% anticipate the development of agriculture and industries and the end to dependence on resources.

Seven percent do not believe Russia may have a significant change in the near future, and 4% are not sure the national development strategy may be implemented.

Nineteen percent think that a high level of corruption is the main development barrier. Fourteen percent say the authorities may complicate the national development, 6% fear an economic crisis and an influence of the U.S. and China. Four percent blame themselves for possible failure of the national development strategy. Three percent say bureaucrats are the source of problems, and the same number blames oligarchs. Two percent do not expect any problems. Thirty percent are unable to answer the question.

Seven percent say they can personally assist the national development. Six percent expect industries to be the locomotive force. Five percent expect a boost from the president and his team, 5% from anti-corruption measures and a changed attitude to people. Five percent pin hopes on the new government, and 4% on the unity, economic growth, the authorities and new laws. One percent said no one was able to help national development. Thirty-seven percent could not answer the question.

Fifty-five percent of the respondents said that Russia would always be special. Twenty percent wish Russia was like Germany, 4% named the United States and Switzerland, 3% - the UK, China and Sweden, 2% - Japan and France, and 1% - the USSR and European countries.
