Church Should Contribute To 'Reset' With USA, Russian Patriarch Says
Interfax - 3.30.12 - JRL 2012-60

Moscow, 30 March: Patriarch of Moscow and All-Russia Kirill has said that not only politicians but also the Russian and American people should contribute to the development of the two countries' relations.

"The Church should try to fill the 'reset' with something substantive from the point of view of the humanitarian, humane dimension. I am convinced that no 'reset' is possible unless we change our attitude towards each other. Of course, we can rub salt into the wounds and incite resentment towards each other. But this is counterproductive," Kirill said at a meeting with US ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul on Friday (30 March).

In his words, political and economic cooperation, the fight against terrorism and collaboration on the international arena "should be supported by people's approval, otherwise this policy will be criticized or simply rejected and this probably happens both in Russian and in the USA". (Passage omitted)
