Russia's Putin Promises 'Appropriate Reaction' To European Missile Shield

Korenovsk (Krasnodar Territory), 14 June: Russia is entirely capable of delivering an appropriate reaction to the deployment by the US of a European missile defence system, but, even so, Moscow would prefer to see all these plans reviewed, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said at a meeting with service personnel from the Russian air force's air base no 393.
"We need to look to the future and react in timely fashion (to the furthering of these plans - Interfax)," Putin said.
"Of course, it would be better if our partners weren't doing this, seeing as this will trigger a response from us," he said.
Putin noted that, whatever terms may be used, "this is still an element in an arms race".
"We are entirely capable of delivering an appropriate reaction," the supreme commander-in-chief assured the service personnel.
Putin named implementation of the state defence procurement programme as one of the main steps in this regard.
"We must, precisely, on time, with the required quality and at acceptable prices, implement our plans under the state defence procurement programme," the president said. "If we do this, there will be no particular threat to us," he said confidently.
