MOSCOW. July 18 (Interfax) - The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) must timely respond to attempts to destabilize the socio-political situation in our country, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.
"The FSB is certainly playing a key role in countering terror threats and protecting the interests of the state and society. It is essential to receive early warnings about any kind of criminal plot and timely respond to attempts to destabilize the socio-political situation in the country as a whole, and of course, the North Caucasus, our particular concern," Putin said at a meeting with senior officers on the occasion of their appointment to higher-ranking posts and awarding of high military (special) ranks.
Border protection, the border guard service and control over spending of public funds allocated for major international events such as the Sochi Olympics and the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) summit in Vladivostok "must remain a zone of particular attention of the Service,", Putin said
"We are spending tens of billions of rubles for preparations for these events," the president said
The president also mentioned the tasks for other security agencies, in particular, external intelligence.
"Efficient data collection, the full and timely analysis, forecasts for global situation - this is a solid foundation for setting and implementing the domestic and foreign policies of the state," Putin said.
He also praised the high professionalism of officers from yet another security agency, the FSO (Federal Protective Service).
"Modern technical equipment and consolidation of human resources of the Service should raise the level of efficiency of your work," Putin said.
Speaking of yet another security service, the FSKN (Federal Drug Control Service), Putin said it needs to cooperate with other law enforcement agencies.
"The FSKN needs to improve its staff and technical potential, more actively exchange information both with its Russian and foreign colleagues," Putin said.
There is a need for a balanced and modern approach to issues such as drug addiction prevention and promotion of a healthy life style, primarily, among young people, Putin said.
It is our young people who shape the country's modern Armed Forces, Putin said.
He also set the tasks for military prosecutors.
"A healthy atmosphere among troops, training and psychological strength of conscripts and junior command staff directly depend on the level of discipline. The fight against criminal offenses and hazing practices in the army - these issues must be closely monitored by our military prosecutors," Putin said.
