Russian Pollster Draws Up Composite Profile Of New Generation Protester

Moscow, 15 February: The All-Russia Centre for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM) has put together the profile of a participant in the 4 February rally in Bolotnaya Ploshchad (square). It is a young man with a university degree and a middle or high income. "Among participants in the 4 February rally in Bolotnaya Ploshchad there prevailed, mainly, men (71 per cent), under 45 (71 per cent), with a university degree (56 per cent), of middle (56 per cent) or high income (27 per cent)," the results of a VTsIOM poll published on Wednesday (15 February) say.

Russian Protest File PhotoThe most numerous participants in the rally were white-collar workers (18 per cent), civil servants (11 per cent) and IT specialists (10 per cent). Most protesters are active Internet users and support liberal and democratic values. As many as 19 per cent of respondents came from other towns specifically to take part in the Moscow rally.

The main reason for participation in the Bolotnaya Ploshchad rally was disagreement with the results of the (4 December) parliamentary election (23 per cent) and a protest against the authorities (16 per cent).

The best speeches at the rally were made by Grigoriy Yavlinskiy (30 per cent) and Leonid Parfenov (18 per cent). The speech by Kseniya Sobchak was named the least appealing.

Of those who gathered in Bolotnaya Ploshchad, 53 per cent were confident that the majority of the Russian population did not support Vladimir Putin, whereas 44 per cent were certain that Putin would win in the upcoming (presidential) election.

Mikhail Prokhorov was the most popular presidential candidate among the Bolotnaya rally participants, with 27 per cent of respondents planning to vote for him. Prokhorov is followed by Gennadiy Zyuganov (15 per cent). Three per cent of respondents are ready to cast their vote for Putin.

"Most participants in the rally are convinced that a dialogue between the authorities and the opposition is needed today (57 per cent). According to respondents, the opposition in this dialogue could be represented by Yavlinskiy (22 per cent), Vladimir Zhirinovskiy, Aleksey Navalnyy (16 per cent each), or Mikhail Prokhorov (14 per cent)," the VTsIOM statement said.

The poll was carried out among 800 people as they were leaving Bolotnaya Ploshchad on 4 February.
