MOSCOW. Jan 10 (Interfax) - Applications for registration as candidates for Russian president are accepted until 6 p.m. on January 18, Central Election Commission Secretary Nikolai Konkin said on Tuesday. The commission will process registration applications within 10 days of submission, Konkin told Interfax.

It has already registered Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who heads the United Russia party, A Just Russia leader Sergei Mironov, Liberal Democratic leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky and Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov.

Having been put forward by parties represented in parliament, these politicians did not need to supplement their registration applications with the signatures of a minimum of 2 million supporters, a requirement for other contenders.

Grigory Yavlinsky of the Yabloko party, Rinat Khamiyev, a businessman from the Orenburg region, Svetlana Peunova, a businesswoman from Samara, Viktor Cherepkov, a former mayor of Vladivostok, Dmitry Mezentsev, governor of the Irkutsk region, and Mikhail Prokhorov, a billionaire tycoon, have been through the nomination procedure, but need to come up with the signatures of 2 million or more supporters to get registered, Konkin said.
