Russia to start releasing accurate maps shortly - vice-premier

Moscow, 27 October: The issue of removing restrictions on the accuracy of maps to a few metres will be resolved before the end of this year, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Sergey Ivanov has said.

Map of Russia"I believe the issue will be resolved before the end of the year," Ivanov told a news conference on the prospects for the development on the Glonass satellite navigation system on Wednesday (27 October).

"An instruction to this effect has already been issued to the Defence Ministry at a meeting of the interdepartmental commission on Glonass," Ivanov said. "The Defence Ministry simply has to realize that the things they cover up have long been uncovered by everyone else," he added.

"To my mind, trying to classify one's maps is nonsense", bearing in mind that maps of the whole world accurate to within one metre have been published online, he said.

The removal of this restriction will also help the development of cadastral work. "With today's accuracy (of Glonass - Interfax) to within one metre, objective instrumental monitoring makes it possible simply to push all this bureaucracy (with cadastral work - Interfax) out of the process," he said.
