NATO thanks Moscow for transiting cargo to Afghanistan
Interfax - 1.31.12 - JRL 2012-17

MOSCOW. Jan 31 (Interfax) - NATO would like to expand the transit of cargo to Afghanistan across Russia.

"We remain interested in this," Robert Pszczel, the director of the NATO Information Office in Moscow, said in an interview with Interfax.

"Diversified transit services are of great practical importance for our operation. All, including Russia, are interested in this operation being a success and in all forms of support for the Afghan leadership in its fight against terrorism," he said.

"If there had not been any interest, we would not have been that grateful to Russia for forging more than one agreement in this area over the past few years," the NATO official said.

"But one should not forget that if the transit route begins somewhere in Europe, it runs also across other countries with which agreements need to be reached. Russia's role is of key importance in this transit. But agreements should also be negotiated with other states, as well," Pszczel said.

"By undertaking projects like transit cooperation, NATO and Russia help one another," he said.
