Rasmussen: Unrealistic to Expect Russia to Join NATO

NATO Meeting

MOSCOW. Nov 3 (Interfax) - NATO's rules allow Russia to join the North Atlantic alliance but Russia has never applied for membership and it is unrealistic to expect the country to enter the organization, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told a news conference in Moscow on Wednesday.

Any European country, including Russia, is allowed to join NATO, Rasmussen said.

However, any debate about Russia's potential membership in the bloc would be purely hypothetical, and instead one should work on how to build true strategic partnership between NATO and Russia, he said.

Cooperation between NATO and Russia should essentially mean jointly handling shared security problems, Rasmussen said.
