Russian Foreign, Interior Ministers Most Popular Cabinet Members, Polls Show

Moscow, 5 June: Russians have yet to get to know the new members of the government - most of the people polled (70 to 80 per cent) generally cannot give an assessment of their appointments. Meanwhile, Russians support the serious renewal of the cabinet, sociological studies have shown.

The most successful debutante in the new government is Interior Ministry chief Vladimir Kolokoltsev, with 23 per cent of respondents approving of his appointment, VTsIOM (All-Russia Public Opinion Research Centre) reported on Tuesday (5 June), citing a nationwide poll conducted after the formation of the new Dmitriy Medvedev-led cabinet.

The second place with 20 per cent support is shared by Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova, Culture Minister Vladimir Medinskiy, Civil Defence, Emergencies and Disaster Relif Minister Vladimir Puchkov.

Next up are Deputy Prime Minister Arkadiy Dvorkovich (19 per cent), Education and Science Minister Dmitriy Livanov, Transport Minister Maksim Sokolov, Agriculture Minister Nikolay Fedorov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov (18 per cent each), Telecommunications and Mass Communications Minister Nikolay Nikoforov, Energy Minister Aleksandr Novak, Deputy Prime Minister Vladislav Surkov (17 per cent each), Natural Resources and Ecology Minister Sergey Donskoy (16 per cent), Development of the Far East Minister Viktor Ishayev, Deputy Prime Minister Olga Golodets, Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov, Economic Development Minister Andrey Belousov, Labour and Social Development Minister Maksim Topilin, Regional Development Minister Oleg Govorun (15 per cent each) and Minister for Relations with Open Government Mikhail Abyzov (14 per cent).

At the same time, there are more positive comments with respect to goverment members who have retained their posts. This goes for Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov first of all (51 per cent gave a positive assessment of his reappointment), less frequently for Deputy Prime Minister Dmitriy Rogozin (34 per cent), Defence Minister Anatoliy Serdyukov (28 per cent), First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov, deputy prime ministers Dmitriy Kozak and Aleksandr Khloponin (26 per cent each), Sports Minister Vitaliy Mutko (25 per cent). The only exception is Justice Minister Aleksandr Konovalov (17 per cent).

The VtSIOM poll was carried out on 26-27 May in 138 settlements in 46 Russian regions.

According to another survey, 55 per cent of the people polled by sociologists of the Public Opinion Foundation (FOM) gave positive feedback on the serious renewal of the cabinet, 8 per cent gave negative feedback and 37 per cent abstained from an assessment.

The renewed government garnered the greatest amount of support from the electorate of the One Russia (United Russia) party (63 per cent), the supporters of President Vladimir Putin and the CPRF (Communist Party of the Russian Federation) (at 62 per cent each), the residents of small towns (61 per cent) and university-educated respondents (60 per cent).

The FOM poll also shows that the greatest popularity in the new government is enjoyed by Lavrov (40 per cent know him), Serdyukov (28 per cent) and Mutko (22 per cent). Russians have little awareness of the remaining cabinet members, except for Kolokoltsev (8 per cent), the FOM poll carried out on 26-27 May in 100 settlements in 43 Russian regions has shown.
