Medvedev: Putting Off Ratification of WTO Accession Deal Unnecessary
Interfax - 5.8.12 - JRL 2012-84

MOSCOW. May 8 (Interfax) - Former president Dmitry Medvedev argued just before a parliamentary vote on Tuesday that confirmed him as prime minister that proposed one-year postponement of Russia's ratification of its accession agreement with the World Trade Organization would be unnecessary.

"We have secured quite serious concessions from the WTO - the average sizes of tariffs, the timeframes for the more sensitive sectors that would be given our country, during which we'll be getting our industry and agriculture ready and WTO rules won't apply to us," Medvedev said when asked in the State Duma whether he supported a proposal for putting off the ratification of the WTO accession accord for a year.

"I think those timeframes will in principle be quite sufficient because it's five years, and maybe even more, to enable us to get ready properly," he said.

Medvedev said individual Russian industries would continue to receive state support after the country joins the WTO.

"I believe that we've got ready pretty well. But we will always have the opportunity to make certain statements and make decisions that help our economy, our industry and agriculture even after joining the WTO," he said.

"The WTO is, of course, a very important institution, but, nevertheless, we have our own interests, and these interests come before the WTO," Medvedev said.
