"How should we react to this? I believe we should not be dramatic about this. This situation is absolutely normal and stable," Medvedev said during a meeting with United Russia leaders responding to a question from United Russia representatives on the increase of political competition and the party's reaction to it.

The president said half of the country's population support United Russia. "Any other political force in the world would be absolutely happy with this result. Of course, we can't rest on laurels, we can't stop at what we have achieved," Medvedev said.

The president said these figures are fairly stable.

"All this talking about the declining popularity and the declining authority of the party are rubbish. However, we, of course, can by no means relax because if the party stops working now it will have a drastic negative affect on our authority. We need to work hard," the president said.

The issue will be addressed at the party's congress and at other forms, Medvedev said.

"We can modernize the party's life, bring in new forces, and put our hopes on young people, the youth who will determine the face of the party in 10 years," the president said.
