MOSCOW. April 26 (Interfax) - President Dmitry Medvedev has refuted a common opinion that Vladimir Putin and he are exchanging the positions of the president and the prime minister.

"We are not exchanging positions. I understand that it is a normal pattern for political and journalistic purposes. But one needs to gain something before one calls it an exchange," he said.

"I must say that President Putin won his presidency in the (election) struggle and gained a rather weighty support from people," Medvedev said.

"If people had denied him support, any exchange you are talking about would have been out of the question," he said, adding that the same principle applied to the prime minister's position.

"This position still needs to be won; the State Duma will still have a vote on the candidate for prime minister," Medvedev said.
