Revival of Gubernatorial Elections Best Prospect For Russia - Kadyrov
Interfax - 12.31.11 - JRL 2012-1

GROZNY. Jan 2 (Interfax) - Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov said he fully supports the idea of reviving gubernatorial elections in Russia.

"This is the most correct decision, which allows people to speak their minds. People say by casting their ballots: "We have a future with this person." If citizens do not support a candidate, he won't succeed, whatever 'muscles,' wealth or connections he may have," he said in the Dialogues program on the Grozny television channel.

A revival of the elections of regional leaders would be "a plus for Russia," he said. "I personally would like people to cast their votes for me, so I would be a democratically elected leader. Why? Because I would enjoy citizens' trust, which will give me inner energy and inspiration. This will come as a credit, encouraging regional leaders to work more enthusiastically," he said.

Kadyrov confessed, however, that he had never had federal ambitions.

"I have been saying all along and I confirm now that work beyond Chechnya is not on my plans. My career will end in due time in the capacity I am in now. I want to carry the plans of my father, Chechnya's first president Akhmad-Khadzhi Kadyrov, through to the end. I see this, not a career or posts, as my goal," he said.
