Group Set Up To Collect Signatures For Annulment Of Russian Election Results
RIA-Novosti - 1.3.12 - JRL 2012-2

Moscow, 3 January: Members of the organizing committee of the rallies For Fair Elections held in Moscow in December have gathered a working group to collect signatures under the appeal to the Supreme Court demanding that the State Duma election on 4 December be declared null and void, member of the Solidarity movement Mikhail Shneyder told RIA Novosti on Tuesday (3 January).

The rallies For Fair Elections were held in Moscow on 10 and 24 December with the authorities' consent. According to the Moscow police directorate, 25,000 people attended the protest in Bolotnaya Ploshchad (square in central Moscow; on 10 December), and 30,000, in Prospekt Akademika Sakharova (avenue in central Moscow; on 24 December). The opposition says the numbers were several times bigger on both occasions.

One of the main demands of the participants in the rallies was the annulment of the results of the State Duma election.

"A working group has been set up and is collecting signatures for the annulment of the election results. We are sort of part of the organizing committee now, but as one of the working groups," Shneyder said.

He pointed out that the collection of signatures for the annulment of the parliamentary election results had started at the rally on 24 December and would continue for a long time to come. "We are not just collecting, we are collecting in order to attach these signatures to a specific appeal to the Supreme Court. It is now being drafted by lawyers and several established parties. The appeal is most likely to be ready no earlier than the middle of February," the Solidarity activist added.

He said signatures would be collected by volunteers, "people who simply decided to become civil activists for the first time".

"Forms will be posted on the website and on social networks for people to download, sign, write their address and some contact details on, and mail to us by normal means to a post office box that we are going to set up. People can also download the form, collect signatures from friends and acquaintances, and bring it to the next rally, the next event on 4 February. Signatures will be collected in street pickets. We intend to launch the picket campaign on 14 January. And then signatures will be collected directly during the event on 4 February," Shneyder said.

He said the collection of signatures will continue up to the moment when "the lawyers say that the claim is ready, so let us attach whatever you have managed to collect to our appeal".

The country's leaders said earlier that the results of the (State) Duma election could not be revised, and its outcome could only be challenged in court.
