Russian News Agency Publishes Schedule Of TV Election Debates

Russian state news agency RIA Novosti published a report on 2 February detailing the schedule for the televised debates due to take place between candidates in the run-up to the country's presidential election on 4 March.

Of the five confirmed candidates, four have said they will personally be taking part in the debates: Gennadiy Zyuganov, leader of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF); Vladimir Zhirinovskiy, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR); Sergey Mironov, leader of A Just Russia; and the billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov. The remaining candidate, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, will not be taking part: his spokesman, Dmitriy Peskov, has said Putin, who has served two previous terms as president, cannot participate in the debates because of his responsibilities as prime minister, although he will be delegating a representative or representatives to take part on his behalf.

A total of 25 debates will be taking place over the course of the next month. Putin's representative or team of representatives and the other four candidates will each be taking part in 10 debates. The debates will be shown on four channels: state-controlled Channel One, official state channel Rossiya 1, the state-owned Rossiya 24 news channel, and Centre TV, which is majority-owned by the Moscow city government. The schedule for the debates is as follows:

The official stage of the presidential election campaign, during which candidates are permitted to canvass voters through the media, begins on Saturday 4 February and ends on Friday 2 March.
