Russian Deputy Minister Ridicules US And EU Policy Of Sanctions Against Iran
Interfax - 4.3.12 - JRL 2012-62

Moscow, 3 April: Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov has described the US and EU policy of stepping up sanctions against Iran as "total surrealism".

"Our partners in the EU and European Union regard sanctions like, for example, groups of teenagers in various societies, who are very much fascinated by amulets and talismans. Amulets and talismans are means that repel evils spirits," Ryabkov said in an interview with Interfax.

"For the USA and European Union sanctions are the amulets that should repel these evil spirits because I do not see any rational approach to all this in the policy of the USA or European Union, I don't see any at all. This is complete surrealism," the deputy minister stressed.

"Years are going by and the Iranian side is not making any concessions under the strengthening pressure of sanctions. Nevertheless, only one conclusions is being drawn from this, namely, that one simply needs to step up the pressure of sanctions, cover oneself all over, pierce nose and ears, draw a circle around oneself with chalk, do anything except undertake something rational in order to conduct serious talks," Ryabkov noted and added: "Unfortunately, this is the outcome of the policy of recent years".

"I hope that the talks (between the international intermediaries and Iran - Interfax), which are approaching, will turn out different and that there will not be a gap of one-and-half years between the forthcoming round and a possible continuation of the talks, like it was this time," Ryabkov announced.

At present the time and place for resuming talks on the Iranian nuclear problem between the 5+1 group of international intermediaries (five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany - Interfax) and Tehran is being discussed.

The last round of talks took place in January 2011 in Istanbul.
