Chechen Leader Says Less Than 50 Militants Left In Chechnya
Interfax - 12.31.11 - JRL 2012-1

Groznyy, 31 December: Head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov has said that there could be less than 50 militants in the territory.

"Of course, no-one knows the exact number. But abundant operational information indicates that there may be no more than 50. Members of illegal armed groups who have recently given themselves up cite the same information," Kadyrov said during the programme "Dialogi" on the TV channel Groznyy on Saturday evening (31 December).

"They no longer exist as groups. Bases and trenches have been completely smashed and destroyed. Members of the police and special services are looking for the remains of armed groups around the clock, " Kadyrov said.

"Those who have not yet laid down arms have doomed themselves to destruction. They have become very suspicious to their own henchmen. They kill them on the slightest suspicion. They demand that young people kill first and foremost relatives, if they serve in the police," he said.

"Recently there have been several cases where the relatives themselves have handed over militants who have appeared at home for a break. They say that this is because it is better for a son to do time that to commit grave crimes and be neutralized by the security forces," Kadyrov added.
