Russia never acted behind the scenes in Ukraine - Putin

MOSCOW. Jan 24 (Interfax) - Russia has always said that it will work with any president elected by the Ukrainian people, Russian President Vladimir Putin told Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko on Monday.

"It's not our first meeting, we have known each other for a long time. And of course, you know that Russia has never acted behind the scenes in post-Soviet space, which also refers to the opposition. We have never acted in [a way that would] bypass the government, the same pertains to Ukraine," Putin said before his talks with Yushchenko.

"Lately, we have only been doing what the Ukrainian government has asked. You know this, it's not a secret. We only hope that we will have the same trustworthy relations with you," the Russian president told Yushchenko.
