Russia denies new nukes will be targeted at anyone

MOSCOW. Nov 22 (Interfax) - A Russian deputy foreign minister has denied that nuclear weapons that are being developed by Russia and were mentioned recently by President Vladimir Putin will be targeted against any country.

The weapons reflect "the modernization of the Russian armed forces as a whole. The new nuclear weapons are not targeted at any country, least of all are they targeted at Europe. We don't have any new enemy. Besides, the nuclear arsenal is not being enlarged. It is simply being modernized in order to increase its accuracy and provide better protection from hostile attacks. So the Europeans have no reason to worry," Vladimir Chizhov told the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag.

He declined to disclose what the new weapons will be like. "Please understand me correctly, such details are secrets that exist in all nuclear powers," he said.
