Most Russians support tighter control over travel into and from country -poll

MOSCOW. Sept 16 (Interfax) - As many as 92% of the 1,500 Russians polled on September 4 by the Public Opinion poll agreed that tighter control over the travel from and into the country would help fight terrorism. Only 5% disagreed with this view, while 82% believed that the police should check people's documents on the street and in public places more often, while 14% rejected this view.

Sixty five percent of the poll sample thought that control over mass media would be helpful but 22% would oppose this; 45% would support the establishment of armed groups of civilians to fight terrorism. A comparable number do not think that this should be done; 44% thought that the police and special services must be allowed to tap telephones and read people's correspondence while 45% believe that this would be premature.
