PRESIDENT PUTIN TAKES PART IN INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS ON MOSCOW'S RED SQUARE

MOSCOW, June 12 (RIA Novosti) - President Vladimir Putin has taken part in Independence Day celebrations on Red Square, in the heart of the nation's capital.

Independence Day is a great occasion to celebrate for all those who work to make their country strong and prosperous, Mr Putin said in a speech. "People of different generations are now here, on Red Square. Representatives of all of our vast country's regions have gathered here. Together, we are responsible for Russia's fate. We [work] hand in hand to build a free and democratic power. We want our country to be an authoritative and progressive member of the family of nations," President Putin pointed out.

"The millennium-long unity of Russian peoples is what gives us strength to cope with this hard task. We draw on the experience and achievements of our predecessors.

"We are well aware of our new potentialities today, and we actively apply them," the President proceeded. Speaking of the nation's recent achievements, he singled out political consolidation, economic growth, and higher international profile. Mr Putin reiterated the government's commitment to developing "real federalism and a powerful and influential civil society." These things are now becoming part of the Russian people's every-day life rather than merely their ideals and aspirations.

"Our aim is to [create conditions to enable] each and every person living in this country to realize his/her talents and capabilities, to ensure that the government, at all of its levels, honestly serves the interests of the nation, working responsibly as well as efficiently.

"By choosing this path, we have committed ourselves to the values of patriotism, freedom and democracy," President Putin said. According to him, the Russian government is well aware that the country's economic well-being depends directly on how active its people are and that it can be strong politically only if its citizens' rights and freedoms are effectivelyprotected.

Speaking of economic, social, and political tasks ahead, the Russian leader called for national unity and urged every citizen to work for the common good of the nation.

Constructive mood and civil solidarity will make it possible for Russia to achieve the goals it has set itself, Mr Putin said. Prosperity and well-being will then come to people throughout the country, in major cities and small rural communities alike.
